U1.08 — Business Public Image
Overview
Dotpoint 8: The concept of business public image
Business public image is the overall impression people have of a business. It is shaped by customer experiences, reviews, media coverage and how the business behaves, especially when problems occur.
Public Relations (PR) is the management of public image. PR involves planning and controlling the information a business shares so it can build trust, protect its reputation and maintain strong relationships with key groups.
The key idea is that a strong public image can influence how customers, employees and the wider community respond to a business. Positive PR can create free publicity and strengthen trust, while poor handling of complaints or negative publicity can quickly damage reputation.
📣Public Relations (PR)
Public Relations (PR) is the strategic management of communication about a business. It aims to shape public opinion by building trust, improving relationships and protecting the business’s reputation.
PR is different from traditional paid advertising because businesses often use communication, community involvement, media coverage and direct responses to shape how people view them.
Effective PR is usually ongoing. Businesses need to communicate consistently and respond quickly when issues arise, because public opinion can change rapidly through online reviews, social media and news coverage.
The two goals of PR
1) Free marketing tool - earned media
Positive information about a business can be shared through the media, community groups or online platforms without the business purchasing traditional advertising space.
WA example: a Margaret River venue wins an award and is featured in local media. The publicity improves awareness and may increase bookings.
2) Damage control
PR is also used when a business faces complaints, criticism or negative publicity. The business needs to release accurate information, respond appropriately and explain how the issue will be fixed.
WA example: a café in Baldivis responds quickly after a viral complaint by apologising, explaining the fix and showing evidence of improvements.
🛠️Ways to create a better public image
Common PR methods
- Consistent customer service - fair refunds, fast responses and clear policies.
- Direct communication - newsletters, email updates and SMS alerts, especially during disruptions.
- Social media - TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn for updates, replies and reputation management.
- Working with the press / news media - media releases, interviews and local-business stories.
- Publicity events - launches, open days, store openings and community events.
- Speeches to targeted groups - seminars, professional organisations and business breakfasts.
- Talk show appearances - radio or television interviews to explain changes or promote a launch.
- Blogs and vlogs - behind-the-scenes content that can build trust and show credibility.
- Books and other writing - guides and articles that position the business as knowledgeable.
- Transparency - admitting mistakes, explaining what changed and showing evidence of improvements.
and
- Corporate sponsorship - sponsoring local sport, school events or community programs (covered in more detail in U1.09).
- Donations - supporting charities or community fundraisers (covered in more detail in U1.09).
✔ A café in Victoria Park posts clear updates during a supply delay and offers a fair fix, helping protect trust.
✔ A gym in Osborne Park replies politely to a 1-star review and clearly explains its cancellation policy, helping reduce future complaints.
✔ A tradie business in Armadale shares before-and-after jobs, explains scope and pricing and follows up with customers, helping build word-of-mouth.
✔ A retailer in Midland runs an in-store launch event and invites local media, creating the opportunity for free publicity.
Example of how to write this in an exam
A business can improve its public image by using social media to communicate openly with customers. For example, an Osborne Park gym could respond professionally to a negative online review, explain its cancellation policy and offer to resolve the customer’s concern. This shows other customers that the business takes complaints seriously and communicates transparently. As a result, the gym may protect its reputation, strengthen customer trust and reduce the chance that one negative review causes wider reputational damage.
⚖️Benefits of a positive public image (and limitations)
Benefits of a positive public image
- Higher sales: customers may be more likely to choose a business they trust, particularly when competing products are similar.
- Customer loyalty: customers may return because they feel confident in the business and its service.
- More referrals: positive word-of-mouth and stronger reviews can attract new customers.
- Competitive advantage: a strong reputation can become a point of difference from competitors.
- Easier hiring: a positive image can make the business more attractive to potential employees.
- Crisis protection: established trust may help a business recover more quickly after a mistake or negative incident.
Limitations / risks
- PR cannot cover poor performance: if the product or service remains poor, reputation will eventually suffer.
- Bad news spreads quickly: one incident can go viral and damage trust in a short period.
- It takes time and money: training, staff, content, customer-service systems and consistent messaging all require resources.
- Dishonest PR can backfire: if a business is misleading or appears to hide the truth, reputational damage may become worse.
Example of how to write this in an exam
One benefit of a positive public image is stronger customer loyalty. Customers who trust a business may be more likely to return and recommend it to others, which can increase sales and provide a competitive advantage. However, building and maintaining a strong public image requires time and money, including staff training, customer-service systems and ongoing communication. In addition, PR cannot compensate for consistently poor products or service. Therefore, a positive public image is most effective when the business’s communication is supported by genuine performance and customer experience.
