U1.05 — Identification of a business opportunity

Overview

A business opportunity is a genuine chance to make money by meeting a customer need or solving a problem. In Business Management and Enterprise, it’s about moving from a simple idea to a viable plan — something that could actually work in the real world.

In Western Australia (WA), opportunities come from the state’s diverse economy — mining, construction, technology, tourism, and small business — as well as changes in consumer behaviour and online trends.

🔍1. Real-World Observation

Some of the best ideas come from everyday life — noticing what’s missing or what frustrates people.

  • A local café with no vegan options → opportunity for plant-based catering.
  • Tradies missing quotes → opportunity for a simple mobile app.
  • No dog-wash service in your suburb → opportunity for a mobile pet wash.

Observe problems, listen to complaints, and spot patterns — those often point straight to opportunity.

🌐2. Online Business Platforms and Trend Sites

There are several excellent websites that help entrepreneurs find opportunities or study what’s trending.

Platform How It Helps Example
Business.gov.au Official site for Australian business setup and support. Has idea guides and grants. Find templates for starting a small café or cleaning service.
WA Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) Offers free workshops, business ideas, mentoring, and case studies. Read local success stories and learn how they spotted gaps in the WA market.
Side Hustle Australia Lists small online and offline business ideas. Find low-cost start-up ideas such as online tutoring or digital design.
Shopify Trending Products Shows what products are in demand globally. Discover ideas for an online store — like eco-friendly homeware or fitness accessories.
Google Trends Analyses what Australians are searching for. See if searches for “sauna Perth” or “Pilates studio” are rising.
Facebook Marketplace / Gumtree / Airtasker Shows local demand for services. Notice how many people want cleaning, lawn care, or delivery help.

These sites help see what people are buying, searching, and needing — and therefore where a potential business opportunity might exist.

📱3. Online-Based Opportunities

With more people working and shopping online, many WA entrepreneurs are building small digital businesses.

Examples of Online Business Opportunities:

  • E-commerce: Selling handmade items through Etsy or Shopify.
  • Digital services: Social media management, tutoring, photography editing, or web design.
  • Content creation: Starting YouTube channels, podcasts, or local Perth lifestyle blogs.
  • Affiliate marketing: Earning commissions for promoting other brands.
  • Online learning: Offering short skill courses or training programs.

Example (WA): A Fremantle designer sells eco-friendly tote bags online using Shopify and markets them through Instagram. Another example is a Perth student starting an online tutoring service for ATAR English.

🧩4. Local Community and Industry Sources

Business opportunities often appear through local or regional networks:

  • Local councils: Business directories often highlight gaps in services.
  • Chambers of Commerce (CCIWA): Networking and local business trends.
  • Markets & pop-ups: Farmers’ markets or Perth Makers Market show what small producers are selling — and what’s missing.
  • Tourism WA & Regional Development: Growth areas like eco-tourism or cultural experiences.

Example: Tourism WA’s regional growth strategy identified opportunities for Aboriginal cultural tourism and eco-tours in Margaret River and Broome.

🧠5. Personal Strengths and Passions

Many entrepreneurs start with what they’re good at or what they love.

  • A student good at design → small online art store.
  • Someone into fitness → start a local bootcamp.
  • Skilled at baking → custom cakes for events.

Matching personal interests to a market gap increases both motivation and long-term success.
