U3.16 — Benefits of Innovation for Business
Overview
Dotpoint 16: benefits of innovation for business, including financial gain, expansion of global market presence and increased market share.
Benefits of innovation are the positive outcomes a business may experience when it successfully improves its products, processes or services.
In the previous dotpoint, the focus was on the role of innovation: what innovation does to products, processes and services.
This dotpoint focuses on the benefits of innovation: what the business can gain from successful innovation.
The three syllabus benefits are:
- financial gain
- expansion of global market presence
- increased market share
💰 Financial gain
Financial gain means innovation helps the business improve its financial performance. This may occur through higher sales revenue, higher profit, lower costs, improved productivity or stronger cash flow.
How innovation can create financial gain
Innovation can create financial gain when it gives customers a stronger reason to buy, allows the business to charge premium prices or makes operations more efficient.
Product innovation may increase revenue by creating new products or improving existing products.
Process innovation may reduce costs by lowering waste, labour time or errors.
Service innovation may increase repeat purchases by improving customer satisfaction.
The key exam idea is simple: innovation changes the product, process or service, and that change can improve revenue, reduce costs or increase profit.
How this benefit works
Higher sales revenue
New or improved products can attract more customers, encourage repeat purchases and increase the number of units sold.
Higher profit margins
Unique, high-quality or premium innovations may allow a business to charge higher prices.
Lower operating costs
Process innovation can reduce waste, delays, manual labour and errors, helping the business become more efficient.
Cause-and-effect chain for an exam answer
- The business invests in innovation to improve a product, process or service.
- The innovation makes the business more appealing, efficient or productive.
- This can increase revenue or reduce costs.
- As a result, the business may improve profit, cash flow and long-term financial performance.
Real-world examples
Breville
Breville uses product innovation by improving coffee machines, kitchen appliances and smart features to keep its products attractive in a competitive consumer market.
This can create financial gain because customers may be willing to pay premium prices for innovative, high-quality products, increasing sales revenue and profit.
CSL
CSL uses product innovation through the development of advanced biotherapies, vaccines and plasma-based medical products.
This can create financial gain because highly innovative health products can support strong global demand, premium pricing and long-term revenue growth.
BHP
BHP uses process innovation through autonomous haulage, advanced data systems and remote operations in parts of its mining operations.
This can create financial gain because more efficient processes may reduce operating costs, improve productivity and strengthen profitability.
Example of how to write this in an exam
One benefit of innovation is financial gain. A business that improves its products, processes or services may attract more customers, increase sales revenue or reduce operating costs. For example, Breville regularly improves its coffee machines and kitchen appliances with new features and better design. This means the business may attract more customers and charge premium prices for innovative products. As a result, successful innovation can increase revenue, improve profit and strengthen the business’s financial performance.
🌏 Expansion of global market presence
Expansion of global market presence means innovation helps a business enter, grow or strengthen its position in overseas markets.
How innovation can expand global market presence
Innovation can make a business more suitable for international markets by improving products, digital platforms, delivery systems, customer support or online access.
Product innovation can help a business adapt to different overseas customer preferences.
Process innovation can help the business manage international orders, logistics and payments.
Service innovation can help overseas customers receive support through online tools, apps, tracking systems and multilingual communication.
The key exam idea is that innovation can remove barriers to international growth and make it easier for customers in other countries to access, trust and buy from the business.
How this benefit works
Access to overseas customers
Digital innovation can allow customers in other countries to find, purchase and use the business’s products or services.
Better adaptation to global markets
Product and service innovation can help the business suit different customer preferences, languages, laws and cultural expectations.
Stronger international reputation
Innovative products and services can make a business appear modern, high-quality and competitive in overseas markets.
Cause-and-effect chain for an exam answer
- The business innovates its products, processes or services.
- The innovation makes the business more accessible, suitable or attractive to overseas customers.
- This allows the business to enter new countries or grow in existing international markets.
- As a result, the business can expand its global market presence and reduce reliance on one domestic market.
Real-world examples
Blackmagic Design
Blackmagic Design uses product innovation through professional cameras, video editing software, broadcast equipment and post-production tools.
This helps expand global market presence because innovative creative technology can be sold to filmmakers, broadcasters and content creators in many overseas markets.
Netflix
Netflix uses service and product innovation through streaming technology, personalised recommendations, original content and multilingual entertainment.
This helps expand global market presence because digital entertainment can be distributed to audiences around the world through an online platform.
a2 Milk
a2 Milk uses product innovation by promoting differentiated dairy products based on the A2 protein proposition and by developing products for international consumer markets.
This helps expand global market presence because product innovation can support entry into overseas markets where consumers are seeking premium or differentiated dairy products.
Example of how to write this in an exam
One benefit of innovation is expansion of global market presence. A business that innovates its products, processes or services can make them easier for overseas customers to access and use. For example, Blackmagic Design develops innovative cameras, video editing software and broadcast equipment that can be used by creative professionals in many countries. This means innovation can help the business reach international customers more easily. As a result, the business can grow its global market presence and reduce reliance on its domestic market.
📊 Increased market share
Increased market share means innovation helps a business win a larger percentage of total sales in its market compared with competitors.
How innovation can increase market share
Innovation can increase market share by making the business more attractive than competitors. If customers prefer the business’s improved products, faster processes or better services, more customers may choose that business instead of rival businesses.
Product innovation can create products that stand out.
Process innovation can improve speed, quality and reliability.
Service innovation can make the customer experience easier and more convenient.
The key exam idea is that innovation can help a business gain customers from competitors, retain existing customers and grow its share of total market sales.
How this benefit works
Attracts new customers
Innovative products or services can appeal to customers who previously bought from competitors.
Retains existing customers
Innovation can keep current customers satisfied and reduce the chance they switch to competitors.
Builds a stronger competitive position
Innovation can make the business more distinctive, convenient or valuable than competing businesses.
Cause-and-effect chain for an exam answer
- The business innovates its product, process or service.
- Customers see the business as more valuable, convenient or relevant than competitors.
- More customers choose the business or remain loyal to it.
- As a result, the business may increase its market share.
Real-world examples

Qantas uses service innovation through app check-in, digital boarding passes, flight notifications and customer support tools.
This can increase market share because more convenient service and smoother travel experiences may help attract and retain customers in a competitive airline market.

This can increase market share because innovation can make the brand more appealing in the growing electric vehicle market.
Spotify
Spotify uses service and product innovation through music streaming, personalised recommendations, curated playlists and podcast integration.
This can increase market share because customers may choose Spotify over competitors due to convenience, personalisation and content variety.

Natasha has completed an online horticulture course and is keen to start up her own business helping people build and manage their own vegetable gardens. Natasha believes her business will be successful due to the recent growth in the number of people wanting fresh produce that they can grow at home. Friends have told her about Freelancer, the world’s largest freelancing, outsourcing and crowdsourcing marketplace. It connects freelancers and those who want to hire them.
During her research about the use of online platforms, Natasha has found information about the ‘gig economy’. The gig economy is the use of online platforms like Uber and Freelancer to instantaneously connect consumers with service providers to deliver goods and services. In 2019, 7.1% of Australians had worked, or tried to find work, in the gig economy, with Airtasker, Uber, Freelancer, Uber Eats and Deliveroo being the top five platforms with registered workers. The benefits for entrepreneurs in a gig economy include low barriers to entry, no requirement for qualifications or experience, flexible working hours and a low-risk opportunity to run a business. However, the online platforms hold all the power, often taking a high commission. The income is uncertain and the long-term sustainability of work is questionable.
Natasha previously worked in marketing, so she has a good understanding of how to promote her business. However, she has never managed her own business and is not confident with the financial and legal aspects of business operations. To differentiate her business from competitors, Natasha is planning to be innovative in the way she provides her service by having a weekly podcast and a YouTube channel. She is planning to provide her clients with information about the most up-to-date self-watering technology, the best plant covers to protect gardens from pests and the most effective composting technology. She eventually wants to offer a membership to her website that will include online tutorials for people to learn about organic food gardening. Natasha believes starting up her business on Freelancer is a great way to test the business idea without having to over-invest. In the process, she hopes to use social media content to develop her business idea and grow a customer base.
Referring to the case study and your own knowledge, answer the questions below.

Smart Agriculture Solutions (SAS) has made a name for itself in the Australian agriculture industry for quality products and services. North America and countries in Europe are showing increasing interest in SAS, indicating untapped market potential abroad.

SAS is committed to understanding and adhering to these legal frameworks, ensuring compliance and protecting its reputation.

Case study / context
Fizzology, an Australian soft drink company, specialises in a variety of flavoured drinks and is seeking to adapt and change its product range to meet new market trends. The current consumer market is looking for healthier options and seeking businesses that are seen to be environmentally-conscious and sustainable in their manufacturing and packaging.
Fizzology wants to conduct research and development to innovate their current products and invent new product ranges. It is looking into creating a kombucha range, fizzy flavoured tea drinks and reduced sugar in their popular Fizzology flavoured soft drinks. They are hoping that by investing in innovation of their products, it will create an opportunity to revitalise their sales in Australia and also provide an opportunity for the business to expand their new product lines globally.
Some members of senior management are not entirely convinced the time and investment into innovation is a wise move. They have seen other drink companies already launch kombucha and sugar-free drinks and they believe there are already strong competitors in the market. Some middle managers are also resistant to the change, concerned about job losses, changes to work routines and pressure to learn new skills and information about the new products. To manage this resistance to change, Fizzology is turning to Kotter’s 8 Step change management model. The business wants to highlight to team members the importance of adapting to consumer tastes and trends and to demonstrate the long-term benefits of being an environmentally-conscious business.
Hoping to convince the Fizzology management team of this change in the business, some team members are working towards having a plan in place to complete the research, investment and innovation to launch their new products internationally in the summer of 2027. Fizzology is aware that even though there are big brand names worldwide in the soft drink market, there is massive revenue potential and the number of potential customers is huge.
Question: Describe two benefits of innovation for Fizzology if it was to improve its products. (4 marks)
Command term focus: Describe
Describe requires the main features of two benefits, linked to Fizzology’s product innovation.
See the full command term guide here: Command Terms.

A second benefit is expansion of global market presence. Product innovation may give Fizzology new drink ranges that can be launched internationally in the summer of 2027. This could help the business enter overseas soft drink markets with huge numbers of potential customers and reduce reliance on the Australian market.
