U2.07 — The Concept of Intellectual Property (IP)
Overview
Dotpoint 7: the concept of intellectual property (IP).
Intellectual Property, usually shortened to IP, means ideas and creations that have value and can be legally protected. It is not a physical asset like a shop, car or machine. Instead, it is something created by the mind.
For businesses, IP can include things like a brand name, logo, invention, product design, song, website content or advertising material. A lot of modern business value comes from these kinds of ideas rather than just physical products.
💡 What intellectual property means
Intellectual Property is something valuable that comes from a person’s or business’s ideas, creativity or innovation. It may be a new invention, a recognisable brand, a unique design or an original creative work.
Put simply
If a business creates something original that gives it an advantage or helps it stand out, that may be intellectual property.
Brand examples
A business name, slogan, logo or symbol that customers recognise.
Creation examples
A song, video, photo, app, ad campaign, poster or website text.
Innovation examples
A new product idea, improved process, original packaging look or new device.
IP is often invisible, but valuable
A café’s coffee machine is a physical asset. Its logo, social media content, menu design and unique product idea are examples of assets that may fall under intellectual property. Even though you cannot always touch IP, it can still be one of the most valuable parts of a business.
